About Me:
Susan Isaak Lolis, published and award-winning writer. She has been a teacher of creative writing at the Muse Writers Center, University of Miami, Florida Atlantic University, Loyola Marymount University, and at Georgia Military College. She will bring extensive experience helping you shape your story and bringing it out into the world.
Susan was shortlisted in the William Wisdom-William Faulkner novel contest and long-listed in the Santa Fe Writers Project Novel Competition. Her novel was also a semifinalist for the Eludia Award. One of her stories, ‘Vivien’s Sister,’ won the James Knudsen Prize for Fiction and is published in Bayou Magazine.
Kiese Laymon, writer of Heavy and How To Kill Yourself and Others in America, said this about “Viven’s Sister,” the winning story:
“Vivien’s Sister” is a “how to” in the importance of texturing subtext in storytelling. While giving us a layered story filled with love, sex, loss, fear and memory, the piece most amazingly shows us how terrifying literal and metaphoric consumption is to families, and specifically to women. Food plays a huge role in this piece from beginning to end, and the minutiae of the storytelling is never overwhelmed by stunning descriptions of food cooking, food simmering, food ultimately being consumed. “Vivien’s Sister” is a marvelous literary achievement.”
Susan was also a finalist for the following contests:
River Styx Microfiction Contest
Big Muddy Mighty River Short Story Contest
Fiction Southeast Editors’ Prize
Blood Orange Review Short Story Contest
Her work has appeared in Bayou, New Madrid: Journal of Contemporary Literature, Yemassee, Yalobusha Review, and elsewhere. Her latest fiction appear in Arkansas Review, Fiction Southeast, and Drunkmonkeys. She holds an M.F.A. in fiction from the University of Miami. While there, she was a James Michener fellow and won a University of Miami fiction award.
